Privacy Laws and International Privacy Issues
Security International have been at the forefront of generating awareness of the privacy laws facing the commercial world with specific emphasis on the Data Protection Act 1998.

    Research

We have been involved with Data Protection since 1986, when we invited the then Assistant Registrar of Data Protection to visit our offices to view the processes we had in place. Since that time, we have constantly researched Data Protection and the other Privacy Laws eg Human Rights Acts; Freedom of Information Act, Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act etc.

We constantly attend seminars both as presenters and delegates. We maintain regular contact with the Commissioner's Office with frequent visits to his office in Wilmslow.

We are members of a number of discussion groups relating to Privacy Laws, both academic and practical. We constantly monitor the web sites of the Information Commissioner, The Ministry of Justice and the European Commissioners.

We share our knowledge with our clients, so that they do not fall foul of this legislation. Why don't you take full advantage of it?

    Seminars and Presentations

We provide in-house seminars and have appeared on the same platform as officials from the Commissioner's Office and the Home Office. Recent presentations have also included organisations in the USA, Europe, Middle East, South Africa, and the Far East.

Our MD was a guest speaker at a Privacy Symposium in Chicago (September 1999), and was the key speaker in South Africa in July 2000 for CSIR, a Government think tank.

We would be happy to provide a seminar for your company or provide a speaker for your own in-house training.

    Training

We provide training programmes for companies, on or off site.
The objective of this training is to:

      a) Create company awareness of the implications and impact of the Privacy Laws
      b) Provide assistance in creating a Data Protection Policy.

This training can be tailored to suit senior management or junior staff.

Furthermore, the training can be supported by regular electronic newsletter updates to your key personnel, which in turn can keep all staff aware of any developments relating to this legislation.

    Audit

Our consultants can audit your processes and advise on best practice.

The audit would also include inspection of your manual files where we suspect the greatest danger may lie, eg a) those reports from investigators which indicate that they have accessed the Police National Computer, b) bank accounts etc. on your behalf; c) unsubstantiated comments by your staff on internal memos about the data subject.

The data subject has the right to request access to any information held on them. If the data subject can demonstrate that they have suffered a tort (civil wrong), then they may have an action against the offending company.

These are just a small sample of the potential issues and implications.

    Articles

We have been commissioned on numerous occasions to provide written contributions on the subject of Data Protection. A selection of the most notable have been:

      1. A chapter and subsequent update for the Kluer Security Handbook
      2. A Masters Degree Course Module on Security Management
          (Leicester University).
      3. Articles for security and Investigative journals throughout the world.

We would consider providing a written contribution to any publication.
